SYDNEY – JCI held its second annual HypeAwards this week, with a full house and double the attendance of last year’s awards.
The evening honoured four award recipients: Darren Gallop, winner of the Innovacorp award for Excellence in Business Development; Victoria McNeil, winner of the Nova Scotia Economic Development award for Excellence in Community Development; Chad Munro, winner of the Nova Scotia Business Inc. award for Excellence in International Development; and Mark Sparrow, winner of the Cape Breton Partnership award for Excellence in Individual Development.
Gallop is a local entrepreneur dedicated to the music industry. He recently started a new record label called Company House Records and is in the process of developing a software product that will allow for artist collaboration and management of the complex royalty structure that exists in the music industry.
McNeil is an 18-year-old whose extracurricular time is spent doing a wide range of volunteer activities in her community. She canvasses for the Heart & Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society and, among other things, is an active member of Amnesty International, the Interact Club and Junior Achievement.
As a biomedical engineer, Munro develops products and processes and conducts clinical research to help improve lives. He is the owner and founder of Halifax Biomedical based I Mabou and has developed research partnerships with professionals across North America and Europe and has secured significant amount of research in Halifax and Montreal.
In his work with the Students in Business program, Sparrow facilitates and guides students between the ages of 15 and 34 in an independent business startup helping to develop their individual skills. He also volunteers with Junior Achievement as the lead advisor for the company program and advises a group of 24 high school students in the creation of their own small business.
The Canada World Youth award recognized Catherine AuCoine, a student at Holy Angels High School, for her long list of volunteer efforts.
“This awards showcased the true talent and contributions of young professionals in our region” said Stephen Tobin, general manager of JCI Cape Breton.
“The event was highly successful and very much embraced by the community. It was an evening of well deserved recognition, fellowship and fun.”
