JCI Cape Breton elects new board, will take on new projects for 2009
December 23rd, 2008

The Cape Breton Post SYDNEY — JCI Cape Breton has elected a new slate of officers for the coming year and is planning to tackle new projects in 2009, says president Stephen Tobin.

Tobin, who was re-elected for a second term as president, says he is looking forward to a year of change and progress.

“We are working closely with our federal and provincial partners in trying to identify some new strategies, new programs and services for our chapter for the new year,” said Tobin. “We will continue to focus our efforts in identifying youth attraction and retention strategies for our island, as well as providing tangible benefits and learning opportunities for our existing membership.”

JCI Cape Breton, a not-for-profit organization focused on the development of young professionals and entrepreneurs, is entering its eighth year as a chapter.

With over 90 per cent of the membership in attendance and standing room only, the new board and executive was unanimously elected in December. The new executive includes: president Stephen Tobin of the Sydney Marine Group; executive vice-president Mark Sparrow of the Nova Scotia Co-op Council; internal vice-president Maureen Barrington of Something Borrowed Wedding and Event Decorating; chair Michael Rudderham of Protocase Ltd.; treasurer Wayne Banfield of Freedom 55 Financial; and secretary Mark Gouthro of Sheldon Nathanson Law Firm.

Committee chairs include Maria MacDonald of Junior Achievement, Sidney Reid of the Cape Breton Partnership, Joel MacRae of Freedom 55 Financial and Alexis Rudderham-Richards of Building Blocks Childcare Ltd.

“This is my third year being involved with JCI Cape Breton,” said Sparrow. “I have watched the organization reach new levels in the last three years and I look forward to being part of its continued growth and success.”
JCI Cape Breton is part of a national organization with active chapters from coast to coast. All chapters and members are affiliated with Junior Chamber International, a worldwide federation of young leaders, professionals and entrepreneurs.

“We have been energizing, organizing and enabling young professionals in our community for seven years,” said Tobin. “We’re always looking for new members, and this year in particular we are going to focus a lot of our efforts early in the new year in engaging new members to take part in the organization. “We will continue to be the leading voice for Cape Breton youth and we remain dedicated to creating an environment where young professionals can not only exist, but thrive.”
